The Old Breed

Okay, most network admins (NA?s) don?t allow public IM software through the firewall. The reason is twofold: security and productivity. Certain IM clients are notoriously insecure. All public IM clients waste time. I?m going to ignore the issue of higher-end corporate IM solutions for now. We are the kind of company that blocks IM software, because of experience. There was a time when half the staff spent half their day chatting to friends. IM was deemed evil, more evil even than porn which only distracts when the boss is gone. MSN Messenger was on our list of software to block, and doing so was easy: shut down all access to port 1863 on the firewall (smart NA?s would also shut down 2034, but that?s another matter).
The New Breed
There is a new version of MSN Messenger out, version 6. To be honest, I dont? know when it came out, I just know that we recently realised we weren?t doing a very good job of blocking it. The reason is simple: it got smarter. Some folk will immediately assume this is a bad thing, evil M$. But, this is in fact a shining example of an area where M$ did something right, something very right. The connections to the MSN servers were so strong that it took us 3 hours to figure out what was going on and to shut it down. For users this means it?s incredibly stable and wont? constantly disconnect.
